How are fertilizer markets coping with the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz?

How are fertilizer markets coping with the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz?

Key takeaways Nitrogen markets are returning to pre-war levels, but risks remain. Urea and ammonia prices have fallen from earlier peaks, though seasonal demand could drive new increases if disruptions continue.Phosphate supplies remain tight and costly. Prices have stayed elevated as sulfur shortages continue to constrain production and trade.Sulfur has emerged as a major bottleneck.

Measuring the state of global food insecurity: A mix of methods, and a mix of messages

Measuring the state of global food insecurity: A mix of methods, and a mix of messages

Key takeawaysFood insecurity measures often disagree. Different indicators can suggest very different trends and identify different countries as most vulnerable.Data gaps hinder accurate monitoring. Low-income and crisis-affected countries are the least likely to conduct the surveys needed to track food insecurity.Stronger country-led surveys are essential.

Tensions in the Black Sea and regional droughts spark rising global wheat prices

Tensions in the Black Sea and regional droughts spark rising global wheat prices

After peaking in early 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, wheat prices have fallen over most of the past four years. This year’s U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran and subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz sent energy and fertilizer prices soaring but had a relatively small impact on grain prices—grain exports were relatively unaffected, and fertilizer impacts are not likely to affect grain production for several months. But now, wheat prices are on the rise again.

Three consecutive years of progress in reducing global hunger demonstrate that hunger is not inevitable, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, said Tuesday at the launch of the 2026 edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report.According to the SOFI report, an estimated 645 million people (7.8 percent of the global population) faced hunger in 2025. This represents nearly 14 million fewer people than in 2024 and 43 million fewer than at the 2022 peak.Food insecurity also improved substantially.

Food Security Remains Precarious in Gaza Strip

The Gaza Strip has seen some gains in food security and nutrition security since the October 2025 ceasefire was declared, thanks mostly to scaled-up humanitarian efforts. However, aid levels have fallen again since February, and the number of people in acute food insecurity is on the rise again, according to a new IPC alert. Since October 2025, in-kind food aid and cash assistance have reached millions of people throughout the Gaza Strip. In addition, commercial imports have resumed, although they remain below the levels seen before the conflict broke out.

From volume to value: Making the most of South Asia's food sector

From volume to value: Making the most of South Asia's food sector

South Asia's food economy is one of the largest in the world. Worth more than $700 billion annually, it employs hundreds of millions of people and feeds nearly a quarter of humanity.Yet much of its economic potential never reaches the market.Every year, more than 30 percent of food produced in the region is lost before it reaches consumers. At the same time, much of what does make it to market generates little value beyond the farm gate.

Iran War: From Fertilizer To Food Crisis?

The critical supply chain for fertilizer in combination with rising energy and transport costs will be felt most by poorer countries and households. Whether this develops into a veritable food crisis will depend on how the war procedes. The Iran war has disrupted critical supply chains and driven up the cost of energy and fertilizer, both essential agricultural inputs, sparking fears of another global food crisis.

Right‑Sizing Food Assistance: New Approaches to Estimating Food Gaps in Acute Crises

Right‑Sizing Food Assistance: New Approaches to Estimating Food Gaps in Acute Crises

The number of people facing crisis-level or worse acute food insecurity has nearly doubled over the past 5 years, to encompass 300 million people. During the same period, however, funding for humanitarian assistance has almost halved. While these opposing trends have put humanitarian agencies in deficit and struggling to respond to urgent global needs, there is also the question of whether we know how much food assistance is actually needed to prevent starvation. Existing early warning systems for food crises merely identify the number of people in need of food assistance.

Over the past 10 years, food and nutrition crises have shifted from one-off emergencies to protracted conditions in many regions around the world, according to the 2026 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) released today. Since 2016, the global share of people facing acute food insecurity has nearly doubled. In 2025, 266 million people across 47 countries/territories experienced acute food insecurity; what’s more, 33 of those countries have appeared in every GRFC edition released since the report’s inception in 2016.

How the Iran crisis affects fertilizer-dependent countries: The case of Mexico

How the Iran crisis affects fertilizer-dependent countries: The case of Mexico

Key takeaways •Reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is squeezing farmers. Energy and fertilizer prices are climbing faster than food prices, eroding producer profitability.•Mexico is highly exposed to fertilizer import shocks. Heavy reliance on imported nitrogen and potash makes the sector vulnerable to external disruptions like the Iran crisis.•High-value and staple crops face different pressures.

A new alert from IPC reports that over 5.83 million Haitians—more than half the country’s population—will experience acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) by June 2026. That includes almost 1.9 million people in emergency levels of food insecurity. While these numbers show evidence of slight improvement from IPC estimates published in September 2025, the latest alert emphasizes that these improvements are highly localized.

The FAO Food Price Index rose for the second month in a row in March, up by 2.4 percent from February. As the conflict escalates in the Near East, global energy prices have surged, with varying impacts on commodity prices. The Index reached 1 percent above its March 2025 level but remains nearly 20 percent below the peak of March 2022. The Cereal Price Index increased by 1.5 percent in March, with all major cereals except rise seeing a rise in prices. Wheat prices rose by 4.3 percent due to concerns over drought in the U.S.

Key takeaways

•Shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz have already driven sharp increases in fertilizer and energy prices.
•Higher prices could reduce fertilizer use and lower crop yields if the disruption persists, posing significant food security risks.
•Most vulnerable are countries heavily dependent on Persian Gulf fertilizer and natural gas—especially in Africa and South Asia.

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) stands as a vital supplier to the global food system, yet its agricultural sector faces intensified disruptions from rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns. In their book chapter on “Adapting to a Changing Climate: Strategies for Productive and Resilient Agrifood Systems” the authors looked at how factors like yield shocks, water constraints, and heat stress introduce new push-and-pull forces that alter crop viability and regional advantages.

The Political Economy Factors Behind Fertilizer Subsidy Reforms

The Political Economy Factors Behind Fertilizer Subsidy Reforms

If you’ve ever wondered why it is so difficult to change government programs that seem expensive or inefficient, you aren't alone. In agriculture, fertilizer subsidies are a classic example, often standing as a major hurdle to the global agenda of repurposing agricultural support toward more sustainable and nutritious outcomes. While economists frequently point out the fiscal and environmental flaws of these programs, they remain a mainstay of policy in many countries. A recent IFPRI Discussion Paper looks into the reasons behind this.

The FAO Food Price Index rose in February for the first time in five months, driven by increasing cereal, meat, and vegetable oil prices. Despite the increase, however, the Index remains nearly 35 percent below the record high reached in March 2022.The Cereal Price Index rose slightly more than 1 percent in February but remained 3.5 percent below its February 2025 level. Wheat prices increased due to concerns about cold weather in Europe and the United States, as well as transportation disruptions in Russia and the Black Sea region.

The attack on Iran by U.S. and Israeli forces and Iranian retaliation against U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf have roiled energy markets by disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—the Gulf’s only sea passage to the open ocean. About 27% of the world’s oil exports, 20% of global liquified natural gas (LNG) exports, and 20%-30% of global fertilizer exports, including urea, ammonia, phosphates, and sulfur, pass through the Strait.

Financial standards can help foster green investment in the agrifood transition

Financial standards can help foster green investment in the agrifood transition

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and climate change impacts is a core element of global agrifood system transformation. Yet, while it represents an important opportunity for capital markets and investors, climate finance focused on agrifood systems has thus far been limited. In 2022, $95 billion of global climate finance funding was dedicated to agrifood industries and practices, with 22% coming from private sources.

Natural language processing (NLP), a subfield of artificial intelligence that uses computational techniques to interpret, analyze, and generate human language, encompasses a range of tasks and techniques. These include the large language models (LLMs) that power chatbots and other types of systems, as well as specific approaches (some employed by LLMs), including information extraction and text mining.NLP offers powerful opportunities to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—including SDG2 (Zero Hunger).

Balancing external shocks and domestic reforms: Do U.S. tariffs erode India’s tax reform benefits?

On February 2, 2026, the United States and India finalized a trade deal in which the U.S. will reduce its tariffs from 50% to 18% on merchandise imports from India. Earlier, on August 1, 2025, U.S. imposed 25% tariff on such imports (comprising a 10% baseline tariff + 15% reciprocal component). These tariffs cover around 70% of India’s exports to the U.S. Further, on August 27, 2025, an additional 25% tariff was implemented, as a penalty for Russian oil purchases, bringing the tariff rate to 50%. The measure was among the highest U.S.

The FAO Food Price Index fell in January for the fifth straight month, to nearly 23 percent below the record high seen in March 2022. Sugar, meat, and dairy prices drove the decline. The Cereal Price Index rose marginally in January but is still nearly 4 percent below its January 2025 level. Wheat prices fell 0.4 percent, with strong global supplies balancing growing demand and concerns about weather in several major producing regions. Strong supplies drove maize prices down slightly as well.

Graduation from poverty in a changing and fragile world

The global poverty landscape is increasingly shaped by conflict, climate shocks, displacement, and market disruptions—forces that are concentrating extreme poverty in the most fragile settings. At the same time, humanitarian and development financing is under pressure, heightening the need for scalable and cost-effective approaches to poverty reduction. Graduation models—multifaceted interventions designed to help extremely poor households to “graduate” from poverty—are emerging as a particularly promising response in this context.

The future of food demand: Evidence from a global meta-analysis and trend projections

The future of food demand: Evidence from a global meta-analysis and trend projections

Understanding how food demand responds to income and price changes is essential for anticipating global food needs and expected consumption patterns, and for designing effective food policies. Two key parameters for this are the income elasticity of demand—the percent change in consumption in response to a percent change in people’s income; and the price elasticity of demand—the percent change in consumption in response to a percent food price change. These are essential inputs in a wide range of economic models.

While conditions improve, critical levels of food insecurity remain in Gaza

While conditions improve, critical levels of food insecurity remain in Gaza

Food security conditions in the Gaza Strip have improved since August when the IPC Famine Review Committee confirmed the existence of famine conditions. Despite this improvement, however, 1.6 million people—most of Gaza’s population—still face unacceptably high levels of acute food insecurity, according to the IPC’s latest alert.

Will extreme weather lead to multiple breadbasket failures and threaten global food security?

Will extreme weather lead to multiple breadbasket failures and threaten global food security?

Currently, 80% of the world’s people rely on just three agricultural commodities as primary food staples: Maize, rice, and wheat. Production of these staple foods is concentrated in a small number of countries and regions, often called “breadbaskets.” At the same time, the incidence of climate-driven droughts, storms, floods, and related shocks is on the rise, creating large-scale threats to agricultural production in these areas. Recent research suggests that climate change will increase both the volatility of agricultural output and correlations across regions.

Food Prices are Likely to Remain High and Volatile

How do wars, tariff disputes and currency fluctuations affect the international trade in agricultural products? Poor countries suffer disproportionately from inflation risks and food insecurity.

Consumers around the world have seen food prices going up ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. While food price inflation has slowed more recently, concerns over the rising cost of living have not gone away. Why is this and should we expect the cost of our daily meals to go up even more in the foreseeable future?

Realistic options for repurposing fertilizer subsidy spending

Realistic options for repurposing fertilizer subsidy spending

Worldwide, government spending on subsidies in agriculture, fishing, and fossil fuels amounts to a staggering $1.25 trillion annually. Subsidies play a significant role in every country’s fiscal policies, regardless of income level or spending patterns. Spending on energy and agricultural subsidies consistently accounts for 2%-3% of GDP on average across income levels and make the production and transportation of food cheaper.

Gaza’s catastrophe will have long-lasting impacts on lives and livelihoods

Gaza’s catastrophe will have long-lasting impacts on lives and livelihoods

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has reached catastrophic levels since the brief ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war ended March 18. Famine thresholds have been surpassed in many parts of the territory, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis. Increasing numbers of hunger-related deaths among children under 5 are being reported, and nearly the entire population of 2.2 million people now faces high levels of acute food insecurity.

Hunger declines globally in 2025 but remains above pre-pandemic levels: New State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World Report released

With the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) deadline of 2030 fast approaching, the clock is ticking for the world to meet its goal of eradicating hunger and food insecurity. Some progress was made toward this milestone in 2024; however, hunger levels remain above their pre-pandemic levels, according to the 2025 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report.

The struggle to get food aid from Egypt to Gaza: Insights from the Egyptian Food Bank

The struggle to get food aid from Egypt to Gaza: Insights from the Egyptian Food Bank

The Gaza Strip has entered a “worst case” food crisis, with its population now facing famine, according to a July 29 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) alert. Responding to growing international outrage over the emergency, two days earlier, Israel said it was reopening humanitarian aid corridors—allowing international organizations to resume convoys—while the Israeli Defense Force announced a daily “tactical pause” on operations in densely-populated Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, and Mawasi to facilitate aid distribution.

The population of the Gaza Strip is facing unprecedented crisis, according to the latest IPC alert released yesterday.
